Developing Mangement Personalities

A self-help guru once defined leadership as simply the ability to make things happen using the help of other people’s skills and abilities. Some leaders are quite gifted from birth, but many leaders go through leadership development after being spotted to possess the leadership potentials.

One question: What type of person or personality makes the best leader ?

Leadership personality

One can visualize that the human being who has the greatest outcome , heading the largest organization or corporation is the individual that makes the superb leader. It is possible.

On the other end of the standard , could a human being with a little urge or entrepreneurial skills end up being a leader? It is also possible.

Developing leadership skills

Some people are really lucky because they maintain an easier time developing their management skills more than the others. There is no question that predetermined character types make better leaders than the rest of us.

The next question is this: What temperament types would make superior leaders? Each of us fit into some character types, whether normal or on the unconventional side.

Whichever it is, there might be some parts of it that would make an exceptional type of leader. On the other hand, your disposition type could undergo a management development training and become a really effective leader.

The following are some of the more recognizable management personalities, different though they are in more ways than one.

Powerful leader

He is the monarch , the lion in an group . He is the class of human being who wants to be in the driver’s chair .

His disposition notwithstanding, the might of his management comes from appropriate decision-making skills which come straightforwardly . His contradictory side is his susceptibility to be a morale-buster.

nevertheless , people will in the end discover his caring basic nature and they will learn to love and respect him. They might even grew and advance themselves from his challenges.

Perfectionist leader

As an animal, he could be compared to a beaver in the organization . He will be the one who will never forget to cross all the “T”s and dot all the “I”s.

This disposition type can manage all the details of the group’s everyday operations, but can nevertheless let go of the matter-of-fact matter . Another good news: person he meets will soon understand and share his knowledge .

Peaceful leader

He is the golden retriever, and he can be the hardest to encourage . He can surely frustrate most of the temperament types listed in any company .

nevertheless , he has the most compassion among everybody. It is extremely easy for the rest to share their most intimate feelings with him.

Popular leader

This person is the most fun of all the other leader types. If there is no fun, he will produce a fun setting for him and each and everyone .

His greatest power is his uncanny knack to rally each and everyone to meet the organization’s goals. nearly everybody wants to be with him, except of course, the perfectionist.

In his quest to make things fun, he usually overlooks some details that can be important . Or so, the perfectionist would like to think .

You as the leader

What leadership personality would you be? What are your strengths and your weaknesses? If you are to be developed and groomed as a leader, what would you want for yourself?

Feel Pressured Into Making Decisions?

Do you ever feel like you’re pressured into making decisions before you’re truly ready? I’ve often felt that it’s a good idea to consider your alternatives first and then make your decision in a calm manner. Sometimes you may not have a lot of time on your hands, in these situations you can learn to speed up your decision making skills instead of throwing yourself into a panic.

Here are some strategies to help you make good decisions quickly:

1. Calm yourself. When you are feeling pressured into making a decision, simply calm down. If you cannot think with a sense of clarity, you’ll find it difficult to make a decision. Breathe deeply a few times so that you can get some sense of clarity and be more relaxed.

2. Try not to run around in circles. That simply wastes precious time. Break the situation down into alternatives and consider the benefits of each.

3. In most situations you will not need to make decisions in a split second. Although you may need to make a decision quickly, allow yourself enough time to go over your options.

4. Write down a list of alternatives or keep the list in your head. Do what works best for you. Think about some outcomes of your alternatives while considering other options.

5. Consider your feelings and the feelings of others. Sometimes it’s good to just follow a gut feeling even if you don’t have much to back it up. Explore your initial feelings about the decision. Also, take the time to consider the feelings of the other people involved.

6. Ask for help. Most of the time you don’t have to be alone with your major decisions, and if you need to make a decision quickly, it’ll help to get another pair of eyes on the situation. Ask for help from someone you know and trust.

7. Shorten your list of alternatives. Try to quickly eliminate some from your list. Fewer choices can make your decision-making easier.

Start learning to think on your feet. Strengthening your ability to think quickly, confidently and with sound belief takes practice. After you’ve practiced it for a while, making quick and confident decisions will become second nature to you.

9. Make your decision. After arriving at a conclusion, don’t hesitate. Confidently go with the alternative which seems best on the information you have before you.

Remember, many day-to-day decisions aren’t permanent. If your information changes drastically, or things don’t go as planned with this decision, you may be able to change your decision to a new one based on the new circumstances.

As long as you practice these tips, you’ll improve your decision making skills. It may take some work, but the ability to make quick and confident decisions is just around the corner.

How To Decide What To Wear For An Office Party

The idea of gatherings change dramatically, with one’s age. Young kids love the party because of all the games and candies. Teens have their own thinking of celebrations with a lot of loud music, dancing and freedom. Family events and parties are quite more mature yet casual. Still, one thing is common with all parties, they are supposed to be fun and unforgettable indeed. The same goes for office parties. There are many kinds of office parties. They are a very intergral part of the business culture after all. One of the leading corporate companies in Dallas keeps arranging events for its workers regularly. These Dallas corporate events can vary from a Dallas team building events to an office holiday party.

Nevertheless, if you happen to work in an office, you are most probable to be invited to such an occasion at least once a year. Ladies do love to dress up for parties, but deciding what to be dressed in is the most vital moment in a lady’s day. Usually, anything that you can carry with poise is perfect yet, office events are a different ball game. Almost all the attendees are the same people with whom you will have to work the next day, so it is extremely necessary to uphold your height of professionalism. Your attire is the ideal way to do so. Following are a few things you must keep in mind:

First of all, always dress for the occasion. Office events can be of many kinds. Sometimes the dress code is stated on the invitations. This makes all seem so easy. However, if it is not stated, look for the time and category of the occasion. Sometimes it can be nothing more than a casual picnic day and at times a formal evening. In any situation, nothing must be out of limits. Keep everything fine.

Don’t forget your two most important accessories: smile and confidence. Even if you are known as a very serious person in the office, a party is a good time to relax a bit. This displays your lively personality and charm.

Being able to grab everyone’s attention is okay but dressing too sexy is absolutely the biggest blunder you can make at such an event. Never wear dresses that are too revealing. This can completely destroy your image at work.

The above tip does not restrict you to dress beautifully. Ever looked at the red carpet reviews? Some star always manage to look so sophisticated yet glamorous. Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and others never overexpose themselves on the red carpet. Try their trick but avoid long gowns. Knee length skirts are perfect.

When the type of a gathering is not known to you, the easiest option is wearing what you usually wear at work. Not jeans, maybe, but a nice spotless piece of satin pants along with a silk or cashmere top. Try something you are mostly comfortable with. A sequined shawl or scarf can actually turn it into a head turner.

The next step is to accessorize that casual look. Bring up the whole impression with the shimmers of jewelry and other trimmings. You can freely add a little bling with stylish shoes, fancy belts and a small glittering bag. A nice updo can really do a great job in finishing the ideal office party look.

Becoming An Ideal Leader

A lot of people are stuck in a rut getting nothing done. You see that none of your goals get accomplished. That is why maybe you should think about being a leader. Doing things your own way, and knowing that things are getting done the correct way.

You can’t just wake up one day saying that you want to be a leader. You need to practice the skills and experience needed to be a leader. Even though it is said that people are born with natural skills to be a great leader, they need to continually improve their natural skills and gain plenty of experience.

Being a leader isn’t bossing people around to do certain tasks that you want them to do. It is encouraging your followers to do better at their job and drive them to be the best without using fear. You want to influence you followers to accomplish certain jobs. Don’t be a boss, be a leader.

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you if they see that you know where you are going. Remember that bumper sticker? The one that says, don’t follow me, I’m lost too? The same holds true for leadership. If you yourself do not know where you’re headed to, chances are people will not follow you at all. You yourself must know the vision of the organization. Having a clear sense of hierarchy, knowing who the bosses are, who to talk to, the organization’s goals and objectives, and how the organization works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing.

Being a leader isn’t bossing people around. You must remember that to be a leader, what you do and know reflects how your followers will act, and how your organization will turn out. You need to build a good relationship based on trust and understanding. With this relationship will determine how your members will react to your orders, or not. If you give your subordinates reason to do everything they can for you, they will.

The way you deal with your people, and the relationships you build will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. The stronger your relationship, the stronger their trust and confidence is in your capabilities. Once you have their trust and confidence, you may now proceed to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake. Communication is a very important key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly imparted to other people.

Leaders can not always do it all. But one skill that a leader should have is good judgment. You never know when a negative situation will come up and you need good judgment to come up with a helpful solution. Not only can you help with this, but the skills of your subordinates can help also. No one should work alone, and everyone owns a hidden skill or talent that can help the organization.

If you have devotion and skills to better certain situations, then becoming a leader is a perfect role for you. You can’t become a leader overnight, but if you put a lot of time into it, you will become better than ever.

How to Give Constructive Criticism

One thing that will be required of you when you are in a leader role is the ability to give constructive criticism, not a destructive one. Not only destructive can lose your team’s morale, people tends to lose respect for you too! More often than not destructive criticism is a result of bad communication skills, thus no amount of good intention can save you from appearing the wrong way.

Constructive criticism, when given correctly can have the positive effect of a boost in productivity as well as output, and on the other hand negative one will do nothing for your workforce, expect to strut your ego perhaps.

This article will attempt to give you some tips on how to effectively get your message across:

Downplay The Criticism – This is a very good way to get your message across, while not appearing too harsh. You can start by saying something positive, and ending it with a compliment. Your criticism should come somewhere in the middle, because of primacy and recency effect, it can comes down as less harsh than it would normally sound. Be sure that you’re commenting on the matter, and never go beyond the boundaries by going personal.

Know when to be direct – Depending on the situation, you might need to stop beating around the bush and approach your staff directly, especially in a situation where the reputation and good standards of your company are involved. Knowing when to be direct can make sure that you get your views across as intended just be sure that you also offer them a solution and not leave it for them to figure it out, as most of them would not be able to. You also want to strive to understand why they did what they did and help correct their mistakes, instead of just punishing them.

You Do Not Have to Repeat – Often we’re tempted to raise the same issue over and over again in a short period of time, not only it will not help the person, it does not help you too. Remember that your goal is to get positive results out of a criticism, therefore you have to give them enough time to implement the change before you can reevaluate them again. Encouraging your staff instead of putting them down is the best way to go about it, there is simply nothing to gain from repeating over and over again in a short time.

Have private discussion – If you think that the situation might look bad for your staff, then you should only give your piece of mind in private. Nobody likes to be embarrassed and saving them that will get you more respect from your staff, not to mention that your workforce loyalty will increase too!

Finally, do not leave anything to imagination, vague criticism is as bad as destructive ones, do make sure that whenever you’re commenting on your staff, you have a good reason and solution to offer!

Leadership Development: A Process Of Continuous Continual Improvement

Leadership Development as an Art
Having a team follow and look up to you indicate signs of leadership. As one who has signs of being a leader, one must enhance this ability since not all are given the chance to be leaders. Having the ability to lead is a gift. It’s something that is offered to all, but only few respond to this call. That’s why, as one of the few who respond, it is your duty to keep moving forward with the skill. Leadership Development training is created for this purpose. It will help you become a better leader not only to your team, but also for yourself.

Leadership development is simply the act of someone wanting to enhance ones skills in leadership. A person wanting to become a great leader will definitely be needing such training to become even more effective. It involves one’s attitudes, decision making skills, behavior, commitments and some technical things like economics and sociological, psychological and philosophical thinking. Only the basics. Besides, being an effective leader involves all aspects in inter and intrapersonal skills.

Being a leader, you have to consider a lot of things. First, you have to know who you’re leading. Are they a bunch of kids or adults? Are they singers or dancers? You have to know. Another is that you should know what to accomplish with this team. You have to have this goal in mind and you have to influence your people to be committed in fulfilling your goal. You should also have the power to teach people how to do things. Of course, being a leader also means being a teacher. Being a leader is more of a sharing process that takes place between two separate parts of a whole – the top and the mid-bottom. In leadership development, you will understand better many things involving your being a leader and the factors surrounding it.

As a leader, you have to know what your boundaries are. Boundaries include having intimate relationships with your followers. As part of your behavior as a leader, you should know that it is unprofessional to be having intimate relationships with those who follow you because that could shed light on the idea of having biases on him/her. Another is that you shouldn’t abuse this power given to you. Of course, you should respect those who have faith and trust in you. Don’t steal from them, or bribe them or scare them. Be a good leader by being in their shoes, not stepping on their shoes.

All these things will be further elaborated for your learning if you undergo leadership development programs, courses, training or workshops. The art of leading is just like any art. There is discipline, honor and creativity in it.

Learning How To Build Self Confidence: Some Tips

Nearly everyone struggles with self esteem issues at some point during their life. For some of us, it is because we received harmful messages during childhood that undermined our feelings of self worth. For others of us, it is because of an event, such as a divorce or job loss, that happened later in life. Some people feel unworthy because of their appearance. Others lack self esteem because of economic limitations. Whatever the reason, we all struggle at one time or another, and could use some advice about how to build self confidence.

Do you feel that you have no control over your own emotions? Because bad feelings often come as the result of events beyond our control, we often get the idea that good feelings can only come this way, too. This is not the case. There are many steps you can take to improve your own inner environment. Here are some ideas.

Physical Activity.

Exercise is an extremely important tool for fighting depression and feelings of low self esteem. When your body is in shape and functioning well, you feel much more confident and powerful. Even two short workouts a week can make a difference, but three or four workouts, lasting thirty minutes to an hour, could change your life. Your body will feel stronger, and exercise will make you feel good emotionally as well.

Figure Out What You Do Well

No matter who you are, there are things that come naturally to you and that you can do well without too much effort. For some, it may be writing. For others, singing. Some people are amazing cooks, while others are wonderful listeners. It is important to find out what you do naturally well, and to do it on a regular basis. There is nothing wrong with challenging yourself and learning how to do new things; that is a great risk to take! But you will do much better at the more challenging things if you give yourself the regular reinforcement and boosted confidence that comes from doing the things that come naturally.

Take Pride in Your Appearance

Many people, when they are not feeling good about themselves, allow their appearance and grooming to fall by the wayside. They feel that they are too depressed to put in the energy it would take to look good. Inadvertently, they end up feeding their own feelings of inadequacy. If you feel bad about yourself, and you look in the mirror only to find a disheveled mess that reflects those bad feelings, they will be reinforced. But if you take the time to make yourself look good, the mirror will contradict your bad feelings rather than reinforcing them. Wear colors that you like, and clothes that make you feel both comfortable and attractive. That way, when you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror or a store window, you will be pleasantly surprised.

We all wonder how to build self confidence. Making changes in our lives can certainly help, but one of the best ways is to work with what you have. You, as you are, are already good enough. So, as the old saying goes, “get in where you fit in.” Loving yourself as you are will lead to positive change.

Major Challenges for new leaders of Mid-Market Companies

The new CEO of a mid-market company has very different challenges when compared to a CEO of a large company. In the larger companies an executive can be groomed for the job over many years, have access to mentors and advisors, but in many Mid-Market companies the CEO is offered the job often with little training or preparation. As a result the new CEO is often surprised by many issues that a more seasoned CEO would not lose any sleep over.

The first surprise is how quickly the new CEO is overwhelmed by the sheer volume and intensity of demands on their time. Instead of realizing he or she is only human, they yield to the temptation to let connections to family and friends wither as the business demands consume their life and time. However, even though they are flooded with information, they have a hard time figuring out what is really going on as much of the information they receive is not reliable.

A good CEO has a built in “spin detector” to weed out those employees are only trying to please the boss and put a positive spin on things rather than telling it like it is. Until the new CEO develops a really good spin detection capability, they need to get out and walk around the office or factory and go on sales calls to hear the “straight goods” from others who are not interest in putting a spin on what is going on.

“Decision creep” is another challenge for the new CEO. Employees line up at the bosses office trying to get the new CEO to make as many decisions as possible and free the employee from doing their homework and making the decision themselves. Once the new CEO realized they have fallen into this trap, it is tough to change gears and get employees to make decisions and only involving the CEO when necessary.

Often, a CEO will start the day making a list of things to do and, by the time it is done, this list may be several pages long. The challenge is for the CEO to pick a few key things and delegate or ignore the rest. We also suggest the CEO start the list the night before so they can be delegating first thing every morning!

Repetition is a common complaint of new CEOs. They are frustrated at having to repeat their message over and over again, not realizing that every time they say or do something, the employees react by spending hours amplifying, scrutinizing, interpreting and often misinterpreting the message. It is only the constant repetition that finally reduces their need to scrutinize the message looking for hidden meaning.

Urgency to get things done is another challenge for the new CEO. It amazes the new CEO how long it takes to get the little things done. As a result the new CEO is often tempted to do things themselves until they recognize that employees do what you follow up on, not on what you ask them to do. There are very few employees who ever get a reputation for getting things done based on one request. These are very valuable employees.

When things change the new CEO is expected to have psychic powers to know how the change will turn out and what needs to be done. It is a hard lesson for the new CEO to mouth the words, “I don’t know.” However this needs to be follow up with -”but I will find out.” In large companies many of the answers can be found at the end of a phone call or email to the relevant expert on staff or on retainer. However in the mid-market company – finding out can be a lot tougher as the resources and data available tends to be limited.

Some CEOs are great story tellers, while others are great delegators. What ever the talent, there is nothing like having a check list of items for every meeting to focus the attention and get things allocated and decided. However there are some checklist items that are tougher for the CEO to deal with than others. We call these tough ones the Show Stoppers. The common show stoppers for a mid-market organization include: when management cannot agree on the future direction of the business; cash flow challenges or the banker giving the company a hard time; losing key customers or having to drop prices to get customers; as well as issues like struggling to get work out the door on time; losing key personnel and late and inaccurate financial reporting; not to mention the dealing with the day the shareholders decide to sell the business you are running.

So what can the new CEO of a mid-market company do to equip themselves for the job? Well besides verifying the information, building checklists, delegating, following up or overcoming the show stoppers without the resources available at large companies, we suggest the new CEO to see the job as a marathon, not a sprint – and pace themselves. By the way the new CEO will probably face one or more items on the show stopper list every year for most of their CEO tenure.

Teamwork In The Modern Day Organization

We might well be familiar with the benefits of working as a team but it can sometimes be surprising that not every one of us understand the real meaning of teamwork. In most cases, we think that this concept is only appreciated in athletic clubs. What many of us do not realize is that it is quite important for us to work in teams and for us to feel that we are part of a team, especially in the workplace. In fact, there are some of us who believe that the words team and group have the same meaning. It can be a lot of help to learn more about the difference between working as a group and working as a team.

If you are talking about groups, they are merely a collection of people that have something in common. On the other hand, teams are groups of people that are working together towards a common goal. This primarily involves having a sense of teamwork that will enable the different members of the team to identify and understand their strengths, weaknesses, abilities and skills. We all know that changes happen everyday, especially in the fields of finance, economics, and technology – it is best that we all start working as a team so we can get through the different challenges these changes pose.

A group of people can still accomplish their tasks individually while a team needs to work cooperatively so they can achieve a common goal. Many companies these days realize that it is indeed easier to accomplish performance and organizational goals through teamwork. This is mainly the reason why more and more companies are taking steps to develop a sense of working as a team in their organization. You might be wondering how these can be developed and you might find relief in knowing that there are lots ways to build and develop teams.

Of all the methods available, team building activities are by far the most popular way of building and developing team spirit in organizations. Team building activities do not only build teams, they can also help much in developing the skills, abilities, and strengths of the different members of the teams. At the same time, this kind of activity can help bridge gaps that might exist within and among teams.

It is quite important for modern day organizations to place value on teamwork. Employees who are able to work as a team give more value to the different tasks and responsibilities that are expected of them. And this makes way for better collaboration and innovation, helping them to increase their chances of achieving what needs to be achieved.

Essential Elements Of Strategic Thinking

Improving the business performance of your company will most likely involve a lot of strategic thinking. In deed, this method of thinking can help executive leaders, managers, as well as rank and file employees, in raising the bar of their performance in the company, especially in comparing where they are now and where they would want the company and themselves to be in the future. It can also be a lot of help to develop such a method of thinking within the company, so it can smoothly work hand in hand with the vision of the company. Through this, you will be able to better ensure that the company is moving towards the achievement of its vision and objectives through a structured and progressive path.

Most management and marketing experts believe that there are certain essential requirements in becoming effective and successful strategic thinkers. In many cases, strategic thinking starts with having a clear vision of your organization in the future. However, it takes more than just coming up with random visions of the future – you must be able to develop a vision with a strategic purpose and it must be done through a creative process. And this is mainly the reason why strategic thinkers are often considered visionaries.

Learning from experience is another essential element of strategic thinking. Strategic thinkers are always ready to learn and are committed to being lifelong learners. They know how to use their different experiences in making themselves better at understanding issues involving strategy. With this, people are able to have better chances of continuously improving themselves at anything that they do. And of course, you must learn how to use your time effectively and efficiently. This is quite important because strategic thinkers are masters of strategic and successful time management.

There are several factors that makes one a strategic thinker but among those that are most important is to learn how to develop a certain level of awareness of the different things that are going around you. This is related to your commitment and willingness to become a lifelong learner. So keep in mind that there are several other important things you must learn and it is best that you start doing so today if you plan to learn how to think strategically.

The bottom line is that in order for everyone in the organization to develop strategic thinking, they must be willing to learn. And at the same time, the leaders of the organization must also be willing to listen. It is only through this that thinking strategically can become almost a second nature to everybody.
